4-24 Recap

We are now more than 10% of the way done with the season and I am on pace for 1300 wins.  That isn't exactly where I want to be but I will take it.  Oh and today we had 2 firsts here at the baseball pickem' blog.  Lets get to the recaps.

Pirates 5 Rockies 4 (Win)

This was only the third time all year that I have picked the Pirates to win and yet it is the second time I have gotten it correct.  The Pirates won this game with 2 runs in the eighth inning to take the lead, right after they gave up the lead in the top of the eighth inning.  The star of the day was Clint Barmes who went 3 for 3 with a home run and raised his batting average to a whopping .146.

Indians 4 Royals 3 (Loss)

I guess leaving the unfriendly confines of Kauffman Stadium wasn't enough for the Royals to break their 11 game losing streak.  The Royals are playing hard they just aren't playing well right now.  This time it was Derek Lowe who shut them down for 6 innings and then watched as the bullpen gave up a couple runs and make the game interesting in the ninth inning.  Fortunately for Lowe and the Indians the Royals couldn't get all the way back, falling by 1 run.

Mariners 7 Tigers 4 (Loss)

Hmmm.... The Mariners actually scored some runs.  That was unexpected.  Seattle pounded out 15 hits against Max Scherzer and the Tigers, getting 3 of those from rookie Alex Liddi.  Liddi also hit his first home run of the season to back Jason Vargas, who improved to 3-1 on the season.  Vargas also got some offensive support from Michael Saunders, who hit 2 doubles and drove in 3 runs for the Mariners.

Orioles 2 Blue Jays 1 (Loss)

I was right in my prediction that Henderson Alvarez would throw well, but I was not expecting Tommy Hunter and the Oriole bullpen to completely shut down the Blue Jay offense.  Alvarez actually outpitched Hunter but the one pitch he wishes he had back was the one that he threw to Matt Weiters in the sixth inning that Weiters crushed.  That gave Baltimore a lead they would never relinquish.

Rays 5 Angels 0 (Win)

David Price ladies and gentlemen!!  Price made me look like a genius in picking him today as he threw a complete game shutout and hamstrung the Angels hitters all night long.  He walked only 1, struck out 6, and was the beneficiary of 4 solo home runs for Tampa Bay.  Desmond Jennings, Luke Scott, B.J Upton, and Carlos Pena all left the yard for Tampa Bay as they took the opener of the 3-game series.

Mets 2 Marlins 1 (Win)

For the first time this year I have correctly predicted a New York Metropolitans win.  I feel like the end of the world should be tomorrow.  Both starting pitchers made it look like it was 2009 out there as they combined for 20 strikeouts and only 6 hits allowed.  This game came down to a battle of the bullpens and the Mets pen was the better one today.

Reds 9 Giants 2 (Loss)

Now that is the Mat Latos that the Cincinnati Reds literally gave up the farm for this off-season.  Latos looked fantastic in shutting down the Giants lineup, which has been hot of late.  Matt Cain had also been hot going into this game, and while he didn't pitch terribly he did get the loss.  The big inning was when the Giants scored 6 runs in the seventh inning, but only 2 of those were charged to Cain, with the rest belonging to the bullpen.

Rangers 2 Yankees 0 (Win)

Yu Darvish is making the Rangers look smart in investing all that money into him, as he pitched brilliantly tonight to beat the New York Yankees.  Darvish struck out 10 and walked only 2 to show that his command has improved since the start of the season, as the Rangers proved that they can win without scoring a ton of runs.  This team can beat you in so many different way and they showed that again tonight.

Cuvs 3 Cardinals 2 (Win)

The other first for me today was correctly picking a Cubs win.  I almost lost this pick but the Cubs got to the St. Louis bullpen for a run in the ninth to tie it and a run in the tenth to win it.  Bryan Lahair always seems to be in the middle of things for the Cubs, and he was again today as it was his home run in the ninth inning that sent the game into extras.  Even though they lost, Cardinals fans have to be happy that Adam Wainwright looked good today, as he struggled mightily before pitching well against Chicago today.

Red Sox 11 Twins 2 (Loss)

Boy was I wrong about this one.  I thought that Nick Blackburn would continue to have success against Boston, but that couldn't have been further from the truth.  Blackburn only made it through 3 innings and by the time he was done the Red Sox had a 5-1 lead which Josh Beckett made sure was enough.

Brewers 9 Astros 6 (Loss)

Well on the bright side I was correct in thinking that this game would feature a lot of offense.  Unfortunately for me I picked the wrong team to come out on top.  The Brewers got home runs from Travis Ishikawa, Corey Hart, Ricky Weeks, and Carlos Gomez tonight and Randy Wolf got his first win of 2012.

Phillies 8 Diamondbacks 5 (Win)

Philadelphia where did that come from??  The Phillies offense exploded today for 9 runs, including 3 home runs, as they beat the Diamondbacks today to even the series.  Hunter Pence, Shane Victorino, and Laynce Nix all hit home runs for the Phillies, who looked like a legitimate offense for one of the first times this year. Lets see if they can build on that now.

Athletics 2 White Sox 0 (Loss)

Well I guess this is what I get for going with the hot hand.  Even though Gavin Floyd pitched well it wasn't enough as Oakland scored 2 in the eighth inning to win this game.  I am still not enamored with the Athletics offense but they got enough of it today.  Yoenis Cespedes struck out one more time today as he increased his major league lead to 22 already in this young season.

Nationals 3 Padres 1 (Win)

I know that the Padres suck.  That being said this Nationals team is for real.  The starting pitching is absolutely fantastic and if they keep pitching like they are the offense will only need to put up 2-3 runs a game to win.  Tonight it was Gio Gonzalez who did the damage for the Nationals, going 6 innings and only giving up 2 hits without allowing a run.

Braves 4 Dodgers 3 (Loss)

Chipper Jones hit a home run on his 40th birthday, and the Braves rallied tonight to hand the Dodgers their first loss at home so far this season.  If I had known it was Chippers birthday I definitely would have picked Atlanta, as they are now 11-2 on his birthday when he plays.  This will be the last time that Chipper plays on his birthday, as he is retiring at the end of the year, and what better way to go out.  Congrats Chipper!!
