5-1 Predictions

And now we enter May.  After a decent April it is time to take it to the next level.  On to the picks!

Diamondbacks (Cahill) vs Nationals (Zimmermann)

The Washington Nationals starting pitching is doing fantastic, now if just the offense would catch up with them they would have a juggernaut on their hands.  Even with the addition of Bryce Harper the offense is struggling to score runs.  They won't need to score many today as Jordan Zimmermann is pitching well and will continue to do so.  Nationals win.

Pick: Nationals

Orioles (Matusz) vs Yankees (Hughes)

I am picking the Yankees against the Orioles every time until the Orioles actually beat them once.  Even with Phil Hughes on the mound.

Pick: Yankees

Royals (Hochevar) vs Tigers (Porcello)

What I wrote about the game yesterday before it got cancelled: "Even though the Detroit Tigers are sputtering right now they still have an offense that can score runs in a hurry.  Luke Hochevar is the pitcher that is responsible for shutting down that offense today.  The Tigers offense will continue to pound the pitching of Kansas City and win this game today."  I still think that is true.

Pick: Tigers

Rangers (Feliz) vs Blue Jays (Hutchison)

Even if Josh Hamilton is out for an extended period of time this is still a deadly lineup.  Texas is playing outstanding baseball and now they get to face a pitcher who is making his third major league start.  The Rangers will win this one.  In fact this is my lock of the day.

Pick: Rangers. This is my lock of the day.

Cubs (Samardzija) vs Reds (Arroyo)

The Cincinnati Reds are playing good baseball right now and the Cubs are not.  The Reds are giving the ball to Bronson Arroyo, who has had a lot of success against the Cubs in his career.  I think that Cincinnati will continue their torrid ways and beat Samardzija, and Bronson Arroyo will shut down the Cubs.  Reds win.

Pick: Reds

Athletics (Parker) vs Red Sox (Doubront)

Jarrod Parker is making his second start for the Athletics, and if it was anything like his first one Oakland will win.  My prediction here is that it is like the first start, and Oakland will take game 2 in Boston.  In the Yoenis Cespedes strikeout watch he has drastically cut back and hasn't had a multi-strike out game in awhile.  He is on pace for under 200 strikeouts which was the prediction in the off-season.

Pick: Athletics

Phillies (Hamels) vs Braves (Beachy)

Cole Hamels is the best pitcher in the month of May since 2006 and he always has success against the Braves.  Brandon Beachy is 2-1 but has a 1.05 ERA and is going against the Phillies offense.  Tough call.  I predict that the Phillies will win this game and they won't score more than 3 runs doing it.

Pick: Phillies

Mariners (Noesi) vs Rays (Moore)

If the Rays have one issue in April it would be that Matt Moore has not gotten off to the start they were hoping.  I am a little surprised as well as Moore was my pick for the American League Rookie of the Year.  I think that he will get the win today because the Mariners offense isn't good and Hector Noesi has given up a ton of runs so far this year.

Pick: Rays

Mets (Niese) vs Astros (Happ)

Yesterday with these 2 teams playing I had no idea who to pick.  Today I have a better idea.  Jonathon Niese is one of the reasons why the Mets are exceeding expectations, and he has fared extremely well against Houston.  His 1.80 ERA is his lowest against any team that he has faced more than once.  Mets win.

Pick: Mets

Indians (Jiminez) vs White Sox (Sale)

The Indians offense is struggling right now and they think that the best option is to bring in Johnny Damon.  Damon makes his Indians debut today as Cleveland looks to get back on track.  The Indians have only scored 17 runs in their last 7 games and are now facing hard throwing Chris Sale.  White Sox win today.

Pick: White Sox

Pirates (Morton) vs Cardinals (Wainwright)

This matchup frightens me for St. Louis.  Wainwright has not gotten off to the start that he was hoping and even though the Pirates offense is horrendous he still needs to avoid the long ball.  I still think that Wainwright will get back on track eventually and I think it will start today as St. Louis wins the opener.

Pick: Cardinals

Dodgers (Lilly) vs Rockies (Chacin)

Matt Kemp and the Dodgers are probably sorry to see April go.  Kemp, the league leader in average, home runs, runs batted in, and runs scored, hit his twelfth home run of the year in a losing effort yesterday.  The Dodgers will get back on track today as Ted Lilly will outpitch Jhoulys Chacin.

Pick: Dodgers

Brewers (Marcum) vs Padres (Volquez)

Edinson Volquez is pitching against great pitchers and is not getting any run support.  He is pitching well but has nothing to show for it as the Padres aren't scoring any runs.  I think it will be another low scoring game as Shaun Marcum is pretty good as well, Volquez will finally get his first win of the year today.

Pick: Padres

Twins (Liriano) vs Angels (Williams)

This game should be a slugfest.  Even with both offenses not being exceptional both pitchers are that bad.  Liriano is still looking to regain his old form and I don't think he ever well.  Meanwhile Jerome Williams just isn't very good.  I predict a lot of fireworks today, and Albert Pujols' first home run of the year, in an Angels victory.

Pick: Angels

Marlins (Nolasco) vs Giants (Cain)

Matt Cain pitching at home is as close to a lock as you can get these days.  Cain has not allowed a run in 2 home starts this season, and has only allowed 3 hits in 18 innings.  Now he is facing a Marlins offense that has not been consistent this year.  I like Cain and the Giants in the opener of the series today.

Pick: Giants
