5-4 Predictions

I have had a rough last couple of days. Looking to get stronger going into the weekend.  Here are the predictions for today.  Lots of good pitchers throwing today.  Should be fun.

Dodgers (Billingsley) vs Cubs (Maholm)

Paul Maholm is not that good of a pitcher to begin with, but he struggles more than usual against the Dodgers.  He is winless in his career against them, going 0-5 with an ERA over 5.  Meanwhile Chad Billingsley continues to churn out quality starts for Los Angeles.  I like the Dodgers to win this game today.

Pick: Dodgers

White Sox (Peavy) vs  Tigers (Smyly)

These are 2 pitchers that have both gotten off to great starts in 2012.  Peavy in particular has looked fantastic and more importantly, healthy.  Peavy has always had the talent, he just hasn't been able to stay healthy.  Now that he is I like the White Sox to win today and take the opener of this A.L Central showdown.

Pick: White Sox

Reds (Cueto) vs Pirates (Correia)

The Pittsburgh Pirates offense has finally started to show some signs of life, but it will be tough to keep that momentum going against Johnny Cueto, who is pitching the best baseball of his young career.  I like Cueto to shut down the Pirates offense and get the Reds over .500 with a win today.

Pick: Reds

Phillies (Kendrick) vs Nationals (Strasburg)

The Philadelphia Phillies are an average baseball team right now.  They are 8-8 on the road, 5-5 at home, and their run differential is only a +2.  They will have to be better than average in order to beat Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals today.  I don't think they have it in them and Strasburg will get the win today as the Nationals win.

Pick: Nationals

Rangers (Lewis) vs Indians (Gomez)

The Texas Rangers have lost their last 2 series, but the return of Josh Hamilton should provide a boost. Another boost will be the pitching of Colby Lewis, who is 3-0 so far this year and is pitching like a potential ace.  The Rangers will get back in the win column today with a win over Jeanmar Gomez and the Indians.

Pick: Rangers

Diamondbacks (Miley) vs Mets (Gee)

Now this is the Mets team that everyone was expecting in 2012.  They are struggling to score runs and now face a pitcher that is 3-0 and looking like he wants to keep his spot in the rotation.  Wade Miley is only in the rotation because Daniel Hudson is injured, but he will be a tough person to replace because he is pitching so well.  He will continue that today and the Diamondbacks will get the win.

Pick: Diamondbacks

Orioles (Chen) vs Red Sox (Lester)

The Baltimore Orioles have one of the biggest surprises in all of baseball so far in 2012, and their unheralded pitching staff is a huge reason why.  Wei-Yen Chen has been one of the biggest surprises for Baltimore, as he looks to stay undefeated against Lester and the Sox.  Lester has only lost twice in 18 career starts against the Orioles, and I think that success will continue today.  Boston wins in a low scoring affair.

Pick: Red Sox

Athletics (Ross) vs Rays (Price)

The Tampa Bay Rays are on fire right now, and are looking to continue their success against the American League West tonight.  After taking 2 out of 3 from the Rangers and sweeping a 4-game series from the Mariners, the Oakland Athletics come to town trying to slow down David Price.  Won't happen.  This is my lock of the day.

Pick: Rays.  This is my lock of the day.

Cardinals (Lohse) vs Astros (Harrell)

Kyle Lohse has been pitching out of his mind right now.  With Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter not being able to take the reins as the ace of this staff Lohse decided that it was his time to shine, and shine he is.  He will join teammate Lance Lynn as a 5-game winner and beat the Houston Astros in the opener of the series today.

Pick: Cardinals

Yankees (Sabathia) vs Royals (Chen)

With the news of Mariano Rivera tearing his ACL, the Yankees are without one of their biggest cogs of the last 15 years.   I think that David Robertson will do an admirable job filling in but he isn't Mo.  Fortunately I don't think they will need him today as C.C Sabathia will shut down Kansas City and Bruce Chen will not make it past the fifth inning.

Pick: Yankees

Braves (Hudson) vs Rockies (Moscoso)

Tim Hudson makes his second start of the year and has to pitch in Coors Field.  Normally that is a recipe for disaster but Hudson isn't like most pitchers.  He has that bulldog mentality that has served him well over the years, and will continue to do so today as he will get the win.  Atlanta will get the win today.

Pick: Braves

Marlins (Johnson) vs Padres (Bass)

This is Josh Johnson's last chance.  If he can't beat the Padres I won't pick him again for the entire year. That is a promise.  Marlins win here.

Pick: Marlins

Blue Jays (Alvarez) vs Angels (Santana)

Speaking of pitchers that are just about to wear out their welcome.  Ervin Santana is 0-5 and has an ERA over 6 and he now faces a Toronto offense that is clicking, which is the exact opposite of Albert Pujols.  I got to admit I am shocked that he is doing so poorly.  I thought he would have a slow start but not like this.  I predict that Santana will continue to struggle and that the Blue Jays will get the win.

Pick: Blue Jays

Twins (Pavano) vs Mariners (Vargas)

This is going to be an offensive explosion isn't it?  Both teams have been no-hit in the last 2 weeks and now they get to face each other.  This game is not going to be fun to watch.  The Mariners have lost 6 in a row and the Twins have the worst record in the American League.  I have to pick someone so I am going with the Mariners.

Pick: Mariners

Brewers (Greinke) vs Giants (Lincecum)

This is a fantastic pitching matchup on paper.  Lincecum is continuing to round into form and now has a tough test on his hand.  Greinke has been dominant this year with the exception of one start.  I trust Greinke a little bit more than Lincecum right now and that is the reason why I am going with the Brewers.

Pick: Brewers
