5-22 Recap

Alright we are back on the good side here.  9-6 day today and the lock won.  I will take that every day of the week.  Recap time!

Orioles 4 Red Sox 1 (Loss)

The Baltimore Orioles continue their mastery over the Boston Red Sox with a 4-1 win today.  The strength of the win today was their pitching.  Brian Matusz struck out 9 in 6 1/3 innings and only allowed 1 run.  The only run the Red Sox scored was a solo home run by Kevin Youkilis.  The Orioles hit 2 home runs themselves to help get the win.

Indians 5 Tigers 3 (Loss)

Hmmm.... Maybe the Detroit Tigers are not as good as everyone (me included) thought they were this year. The Indians increased their lead in the American League Central with a win today and Ubaldo Jiminez didn't even have his best stuff to get the win.  The Tigers find themselves looking p at the Indians and I think that will continue deep into the year.

Yankees 3 Royals 2 (Win)

Even with the abysmal start that Phil Hughes had this year, he still is now only 1 win from .500 after winning his third straight start today.  The Royals scored the first 2 runs of the game but as the Yankees tend to do they rallied back at home to get the win and even up the series.

Mets 3 Pirates 2 (Win)

R.A Dickey struck out 11 Pittsburgh Pirates batters and the New York Mets won another low scoring game against the Pirates today.  Dickey had that knuckleball fluttering all over the place today and he made the Pirates hitters look foolish, which it seems like is not a hard thing to do.  That Pirates offense is absolutely abysmal.

Nationals 5 Phillies 2 (Loss)

Roy Halladay against Jordan Zimmermann.  Normally it would be a slam dunk to pick Halladay but not this year.  Zimmermann pitched well against the Nationals and Washington continues to run roughshod over the Phillies.  Bryce Harper tripled and singled and drove in 2 runs as Washington won their sixth straight in Philadelphia.

Reds 4 Braves 3 (Loss)

The Cincinnati Reds are the first team that actually hit Brandon Beachy around a little bit.  Beachy gave up 4 runs, including 2 home runs to Reds second basemen Brandon Phillips.  Beachy still has an ERA under 2 and he still is having a fantastic season but today he was outpitched by Mat Latos.  If Latos keeps throwing like that we are going to have a race in the Central this year.

Marlins 7 Rockies 6 (Win)

The Colorado Rockies scored 3 runs before the Marlins even got a chance to bat and finally thought they were going to win a game.  But it wasn't meant to be.  The Marlins put 2 right back on them in the bottom of the first inning and just added on from there.  Heath Bell came in and gave up a lead-off double but he managed to get the next three hitters without giving up a run.

Rays 8 Blue Jays 5 (Loss)

Even when the Tampa Bay Rays jump out to a 6-0 lead Matt Moore can't stay in the game long enough to get the win.  Moore continues to struggle with his control as he walked another 4 hitters today in only 4 2/3 innings.  Joe Maddon looks like a genius today because he put Carlos Pena in the leadoff spot and all Pena did was go 2-5 with a 3-run home run.

Astros 2 Cubs 1 (Win)

The Houston Astros continue to hover around .500 while the Chicago Cubs continue to be the Chicago Cubs.  Once again this offense was held in check by the Astros.  They only managed 6 hits all game long and 1 of those was by the pitcher Travis Wood.  This team needs to get some offense and they need to get it in a hurry.

Twins 9 White Sox 2 (Win)

Gavin Floyd can't stop Twins.  That was my prediction from this morning.  God I love being right.  Floyd gave up 9 runs and couldn't even make it out of the fourth inning.  And that was against the Twins offense!! The Twins offense has been one of the worst in all of baseball but when you put them against Gavin Floyd they look like the 27 Yankees!

Giants 6 Brewers 4 (Win)

Well the Giants did manage to score 6 runs.  It isn't too often that you see a team get 6 runs and only get 5 hits to get those 6 runs and yet that is exactly what the Giants did today.  I guess it helps when 3 of your 5 hits go for extra bases but still it is an unusual statline to see.  The only thing more unusual was the Giants actually scoring runs for Matt Cain.

Cardinals 4 Padres 0 (Loss)

Adam Wainwright not same pitcher.  That was my prediction today.  The only swing and a miss worse than that was the Padres hitters today.

Dodgers 8 Diamondbacks 7 (Win)

Now that is how you win a ballgame!  The Dodgers were down 6-1 in the seventh inning and scored 5 runs to tie it.  The Diamondbacks scored 1 in the eighth inning but the Dodgers were not going to be denied.  They came back with 2 in the top of the ninth inning and Kenley Jansen came in and shut the door for the Dodgers.  Jansen's stats this year: 22 2/3 innings, 36 strikeouts.  Wow.

Angels 5 Athletics 0 (Win)

For the second time in less than a week my lock of the day threw a 1-hitter.  This time it was C.J Wilson going against the Oakland Athletics.  With C.J Wilson pitching like that and Albert Pujols hitting another home run for a day at least these signings looked good.  This is exactly what the Angels envisioned when they spent 300 million dollars on these 2 guys.

Rangers 3 Mariners 1 (Win)

I was actually impressed with the way Hector Noesi handled that tough Rangers lineup.  He pitched 8 quality innings and only gave up 3 hits along the way.  Unfortunately for the Mariners, Matt Harrison was even better.  He was shaky in the first inning, allowing 1 run and almost giving up a grand slam to Casper Wells, but after that he shut down the Mariners lineup and got the win.
