5-14 Predictions

A little bit rare that we have all 30 teams in action on a Monday.  With 15 games it is time to go straight to the predictions.

Cubs (Dempster) vs Cardinals (Westbrook)

Both Ryan Dempster and Jake Westbrook have a sterling ERA and are now facing each other in the open of the series between the 2 rivals.  Dempster in particular has looked fantastic since his return from the disabled list.  I like Dempster and the Cubs to beat the Cardinals today.  Just need the Cubs to score some runs for him because Chicago has not given him any run support.

Pick: Cubs

Astros (Harrell) vs Phillies (Blanton)

These teams have similar records so far in 2012 but couldn't be feeling any different about it.  The Astros are happy that they are almost in .500 and the Phillies are not happy at all.  One of these teams was supposed to be in the running for the World Series and one of these teams is in the running for the first overall pick in next years draft.  Baseball is a funny game.

Pick: Phillies

Yankees (Nova) vs Orioles (Hammel)

These 2 starting pitchers both have a 4-1 record.  The funny thing about this is that Nova has an ERA 3 runs higher than Hammel.  Nova gets a lot of run support and the Yankees score a lot of runs when facing the Orioles.  Even when they face the division leading Orioles.  I like the Yankees in this one because they have dominated Baltimore in the past and will continue to do so today.

Pick: Yankees

Padres (Stauffer) vs Nationals (Detwiler)

This rotation against this lineup.  Please.

Pick: Nationals. This is my lock of the day.

Rays (Niemann) vs Blue Jays (Morrow)

Brandon Morrow is 4-1 this year and his only loss was against this Tampa Bay team.  Before that start Morrow was fantastic against the Rays and so it is a question of which Morrow will show up.  I think that the Morrow that has been so good against Tampa Bay will show up and the Toronto Blue Jays will win the opener in the series today.

Pick: Blue Jays

Reds (Bailey) vs Braves (Delgado)

The Atlanta Braves are firing on all cylinders right now and now they get to face a pitcher named Homer.  They got to love their chances here and I do as well.  After sweeping aside the Cardinals the Braves will continue their winning streak by beating Homer Bailey and the Reds.

Pick: Braves

Brewers (Gallardo) vs Mets (Batista)

The Brewers are sending a good starting pitcher out today.  The Mets are not.  Miguel Batista is still on a major league roster and is still starting.  After watching him as a Mariner for 4 years I know what he is capable of and it isn't much.  That is why I am going with the Brewers to win this one, because of how bad Miguel Batista is.

Pick: Brewers

Pirates (Lincoln) vs Marlins (Sanchez)

The Miami Marlins are starting to play like they expected too, winning 10 out of 12 games and getting to a season high 2 games over .500.  Both of these teams are doing what they are doing because of quality starting pitching.  Anibal Sanchez has been doing fantastic so far this year and will continue to do so as the Marlins will get the win today.

Pick: Marlins

Mariners (Vargas) vs Red Sox (Lester)

Jason Vargas against Jon Lester.  One of these pitchers is doing well and one of these pitchers is struggling to get a win.  Do you know which one is which?  Jason Vargas has a WHIP under 1 so far this year and has been getting hitters out with a devastating change-up. He needs to keep the Red Sox hitters off balance by changing speeds and I think he will.  Mariners win here today.

Pick: Mariners

Royals (Chen) vs Rangers (Feldman)

Bruce Chen against this offense?  I would pick the Rangers to win this game 100 times out of 100.

Pick: Rangers

Indians (Gomez) vs Twins (Pavano)

The Minnesota Twins have the worst ERA for a rotation in all of baseball and Carl Pavano is one of the reasons why.  He has had a lot of success against the Indians in the past though.  That being said I still like the Indians to win this game.  Jeanmar Gomez has been throwing well for the Indians and will continue to do so today.

Pick: Indians

Tigers (Smyly) vs White Sox (Danks)

Prince Fielder hasn't gotten a hit in his last 22 at-bats but facing John Danks is exactly what the doctor ordered.  I think Fielder will get a hit today and the Tigers will win.  Drew Smyly has been throwing very well since joining the rotation and now gets his first crack at his American League Central rival.  He will get the win today.

Pick: Tigers

Athletics (Ross) vs Angels (Haren)

Tyson Ross vs Dan Haren.  A game that most people think would be easy to predict.  Not so fast.  Dan Haren has been struggling with injuries and ineffectiveness for most of the season, while Tyson Ross is a flame thrower who I think will be an above average starter at some point.  This is a tougher game to predict than I thought but I am still going to go with the veteran and say Haren will get the job done.

Pick: Angels

Diamondbacks (Kennedy) vs Dodgers (Kershaw)

The 2 aces are going for these teams today and yet all anyone is talking about is Matt Kemp.  Kemp will not be in the lineup today after tweaking his hamstring but the Dodgers still have Kershaw to go out there.  I am going to stick with Kershaw to beat Kennedy and the Diamondbacks, win their fifth game in a row, and gain another game on the division in the process.

Pick: Dodgers

Rockies (Friedrich) vs Giants (Vogelsong)

Christian Friedrich made his major league debut in his last start and pitched effectively in shutting down the San Diego Padres.  He is going to have a little bit of a stiffer task today as the Giants offense is a little bit better than the Padres.  I still think he will be effective and the Colorado Rockies will end their losing streak and beat the Giants.

Pick: Rockies
